Job Overview:

Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. is seeking a dynamic leader to create and oversee fundraising strategy to support our vision of creating opportunities for profound personal change in body, mind and spirit. The VP of Philanthropy is responsible for leading and managing all of Edgar Cayce’s fundraising, membership and donor relationship activities. Strong experience in developing strategic fundraising plans, in addition to the ability to plan and manage departmental resources is required. Reporting to the CEO, this position will develop and oversee a comprehensive program of cultivation and stewardship across a broad array of fundraising and relationship development tactics. The VP of Philanthropy will also work to ensure consistency in marketing efforts and brand communications to all stakeholders.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Prepare a comprehensive annual plan for A.R.E.’s development and membership activities to support the short- and long-term philanthropic needs of the organization. This targeted development plan and calendar will provide concrete metrics and goals for fundraising, outlining regularly scheduled donor communication and opportunities for cultivation and stewardship.
  • Function as a major and planned gifts officer by ensuring that the external cultivation and stewardship of donors is adequate to meet or exceed the goals set forth in the annual plan, including proactive management of the CEO’s prospect meetings and solicitations
  • .Assist with crafting a compelling case for support.
  • Create strategic and targeted opportunities for cultivation and stewardship through personal visits.
  • Create policies and procedures to support major gift fundraising.
  • Develop annual departmental budgets. Monitor performance and provide timely forecasting of expected results.
  • Manage departmental resources (human and financial) in a way that efficiently produces optimal results and achieves stated financial objectives for revenue and expense management.
  • Responsible for successful execution of planned development activities to achieve stated revenue goals; includes working with senior leadership, board, committee members, volunteers and others as appropriate.
  • Oversee and effectively manage areas including (but not limited to) annual fund, membership, planned giving, capital fundraising, donor-specified endowments, grant writing and reporting, gift processing, donor database management, special events, and marketing efforts tied to fundraising activities, as appropriate.
  • Ensure that accurate and thorough records are maintained, including timely gift processing, donor records, mailing lists, contact and call reports, giving history, biographical data, etc.
  • Prepare a monthly and annual summary which includes the fundraising highlights, fundraising results, accomplishments, and summary of goals and objectives completed for the CEO.
  • Serve as a member of A.R.E.’s executive leadership team.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the CEO to advance the understanding, cause, mission and support of A.R.E

  Required Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required, preferably from the field of nonprofit management or related fields such as communications, public relations, marketing or business.
  • Minimum of five years successful experience in fundraising; thorough knowledge of area and national funding sources, as well as laws and regulations governing the conduct of fundraising by nonprofit organizations.
  • Ability to develop accurate annual budgets and forecasts, and ability to manage budgets to achieve business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and solicit major gifts.
  • Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills; experience with donor databases a plus.

  • Ability to perform job in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures.E
  • xtensive experience operating an annual giving program to include personally soliciting funds and motivating others to solicit funds.
  • Successful experience in working with volunteers, boards and committees.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to communicate and present effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and strong attention to detail skills are required.
  • Team player and able to adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with entire organization to foster goal accomplishment.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and strong analytical skills to organize and coordinate a varied workload.

  Scope and Impact of the position: 

  • This position acts continuously as a representative of the A.R.E. as an organization; must project a positive image as reflected by the philosophy of the key principles in the Edgar Cayce readings.
  • Effective performance of this position is critical; position has a major effect on revenues and significant financial contribution to the organization. 

  Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to move between buildings on uneven ground and to use staircases in historical buildings without elevators is required.
  • Ability to life and carry 25 lbs. of boxes of materials/supplies and transport over uneven ground on a regular basis is required.
