Fly into Kona airport (KOA) and transfer on own from Kona airport to Royal Kona
Resort in heart of Kailua-Kona area, where the program will start. Check in
on own; rest of the day at leisure. A welcome orientation meeting will take
place before our first dinner as a group. (D)
May 4, 2009: Introduction to Kona-Kailua.
After breakfast, meet your escort-guide that will take you on a walking tour to Kona-Kailua, including Hulihe'e Palace (used by Hawaiian kings and queens), Mokuaikuau Church (oldest in Hawaii, dating to 1820), and Ahu'ena Heiau (King Kamehameha's personal temple, restored in 1812). Lunch will be on own and the rest of the day will be at leisure. In the evening, enjoy a Luau dinner at the hotel, including Hawaiian cultural entertainment with native music and dancing. Overnight at Royal Kona Resort (or similar). (BD)
May 5, 2009: Kona.
After breakfast, depart for a Native Hawaiian cultural day. Enjoy a morning tour of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park (formerly City of Refuge), which will be followed by a picnic in a park (lunch boxes will be provided). The group will then enjoy an exclusive presentation by a kahuna practitioner of spiritual healing. Continue with a visit to the coffee plantation Bayview Coffee Farm, producer of world-class Kona coffee. The evening will be free, with dinner on own at one of many fine restaurants at walking distance from the hotel. Overnight at Royal Kona Resort (or similar). (BL)
May 6, 2009: Hawaii Volcanoes.
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and leave the Kailua-Kona area to head south. En route, visit the Punalu'u black sand beach with possible viewing of green sea turtles. The group will then enter the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and enjoy exclusive guided walks in park and viewing of molten lava if available, including Halema'uma'u crater (home of the Hawaiian spiritual Goddess of fire, Pele), Kilauea caldera, Chain of Craters Road, walk through Thurston Lava Tube, as time permits.
Dinner and overnight (for one night only) at Volcano House Lodge in park. (BD)
May 7, 2009: Hapuna, with tour of Hilo.
After breakfast, enjoy a morning walk in the Hawaii Volcanoes area. Your journey will continue with a tour of Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory near Hilo. Lunch will be on your own in the Hilo area. In the afternoon, discover the beauty of the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. Check-in and dinner at the beautiful Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the Kohala Coast, where you will stay for three nights. (BD)
May 8, 2009: Hapuna.
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a full day of leisure at one of the world's best beaches. On that day, lunch and dinner will be on you own. At night, an optional astronomy tour will be organized at Mauna Kea observatory. Overnight at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. (B)
May 9, 2009: Hapuna.
After breakfast, depart on a tour to North Kohala to visit the scenic Pololu Valley. Discover the Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, built between 1790-91 by King Kamehameha I, a sacred site allowing the King to conquer the Hawaiian Islands. Enjoy a guided hike to Malama petroglyph field with ancient Hawaiian rock art. Enjoy a festive farewell dinner party at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel to celebrate the end of the tour. May 10, 2009: Return to Kona airport.
After breakfast, check out for transfer to Kona airport for an approximate noon departure. End of the tour! (B)
