Course Descriptions: First Semester
Anatomy & Physiology I - 75 hours
This course presents an overview of the organization of the human body. Although body systems are studied, there is an emphasis placed on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The study of regional anatomy focuses on surface landmarks; individual muscle origins, insertions and actions; posture and movement analysis; and specific nerve innervations. In maintaining the perspective of massage therapy, precautions and therapeutic considerations are also covered.

Body Mind Spirit - 16 hours
This experiential class will expand on a frequently mentioned concept in the Cayce readings: "...spirit is the life, mind is the builder, physical is the result" (reading #349-4). The element of touch awakens new body awareness and offers an opportunity to more fully understand one's body, as well as enhance the quality of life through development of one's fundamental spiritual nature. How do emotions from yesterday affect one's body today? How is illness used as a vehicle for growth? This is a class of discussion, discovery and fun.
No prerequisites.
Business Development and Ethics I - 18 hours
This course focuses on establishing a successful massage practice. Topics include: business marketing, record keeping, licensing requirements, insurance, taxes, resumes and marketing materials, professional behavior and ethical standards of practice. Presentations by experienced professionals in the field allow opportunities for group discussion and questions.
No prerequisites.
Cayce/Reilly Massage - 132 hours
Fundamental technique of relaxation massage, with emphasis on the Cayce/Reilly treatment; combines Swedish style massage strokes with rotation of joints and limbs as well as the stimulation and vibration of organs and glands. The history of massage, contraindications for massage, benefits and physiology of massage, use of oils, draping techniques, body mechanics, endangerment sites and self-care are also presented. Students give and receive massage in this class.

Clinical Practice - 20 hours
Students are required to give eight practicum massage sessions during their first semester. These massage sessions are given in a professional clinical setting with the supervision of a massage professional. The clinical experience is designed to give our students valuable hands-on experience and feedback with a variety of clients.
Prerequisite: Cayce/Reilly Massage.
Chair Massage - 12 hours
Students learn to use one of the fastest-growing marketing tools in the field of massage therapy. Course includes instruction in techniques unique to a portable massage chair ranging from a one-minute demonstration 'routine' with basic strokes, to a more specific, 15-minute therapeutic lower back release, work on the upper shoulders and neck, and therapeutic work specific to carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. Get ready for a high-energy presentation using a multitude of massage strokes and modalities.

Dreams and Meditation - 10 hours
This course, unique to the Cayce/Reilly School, educates students with a clear understanding of Cayce's approach to Meditation and Dream study and the positive effects such practices can have on their lives. Students will develop skills in personal meditation practices and learn how to work with dream techniques individually as well as in small groups. As part of this course, students will be encouraged to have a daily meditation practice and maintain a personal dream journal.

Introduction to Craniosacral Therapy - 28 hours
The first 12 hours of the class is a mixture of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice designed to teach you the benefits of craniosacral therapy developed by Dr. John Upledger. The final 16 hours of the class teaches techniques for grounding and learning the basics of the chakra system and the human energy field.

Palpation Lab - 26 hours
The sense of touch is vital to a massage therapist. This highly experiential class is geared to assist students in developing essential palpation skills, as well as learning various methods of palpation and when and how to use them.

Course Descriptions: Second Semester
Anatomy/Physiology II - 75 hours
This course continues the study of the body systems with a detailed look at how they work together and it also examines the body systems from a bodywork perspective. The pathology, biomechanics and specific nerve functioning with respect to their role in massage is also covered. The focus is on the student acquiring a through working knowledge of the form and function of the human body.
Prerequisite: Anatomy/Physiology I
Applied Pathology - 30 hours
This is an introduction to pathology as it might be encountered in the practice of massage therapy. Signs and symptoms, pathophysiology and indications/contraindications of many diseases will be covered. Assessment and integrative techniques will address specific muscular dysfunction. The Edgar Cayce readings, the mind/body/spirit connection and naturopathic concepts are integrated into the course material.
Asian Theory - 9 hours
This course is designed to give students a basic working knowledge of key Eastern concepts, such as the meridian system, extraordinary channels, five-phase theory, qui flow and basic terminology.

Basic Nutrition - 15 hours
By introducing students to the basics of nutrition, they will gain awareness of the composition of common foods, with practical understanding of nutritional building blocks (water, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins). Students will have the opportunity to analyze and assess their own dietary habits. The transpersonal elements of nutrition will be explored, with emphasis on what the Edgar Cayce readings say on the subject.
No prerequisite.
Business Development and Ethics II - 12 hours
A continuation of the course offered in the first semester. Business projects are discussed, as well as other topics of the business of massage.
Prerequisite: Business Development and Ethics I
Healer's Path - 18 hours
This course covers Cayce's concept of healing with readings., discussions, rituals and participatory experiences of being a channel for healing. The practice of prayer, mediation, cleansing, fasting and rejuvenation in our lives will be explored to deepen our personal commitment to the Path.
No prerequisite.
Clinical Experience II - 30
hours
In the second semester, students are required to give sixteen practicums. The
practicums in the second semester will give students further hands-on experience
while also allowing them to begin integrating a variety of modalities that
are taught in the second semester. Students are also required to give a minimum
of three steams. Prerequisite or Concurrent: Cayce/Reilly Massage and Hydrotherapy
Lecture/Lab.
Hydrotherapy - Lecture: 12 hours
Lab: 18 hours
Students study and apply the various modes of hydrotherapy and other modalities, including stream/fume baths, packs, cryotherapy, heliotherapy, paraffin, hydrocollators and facials.
Prerequisite: None for the lecture. Must take lecture concurrently or prior to taking lab.
Integrative Massage - 12 hours
Review of the students massage performance from their practicums and blending of the techniques acquired in the second semester.
Prerequisite: Cayce/Reilly Massage.
Jin Shin Do® Body Mind Acupressure - 15 hours
An introduction to Eastern healing comparing of the Western and Eastern philosophies, the Yin and Yang theory is presented and participation in Taoist movement. This course teaches simple but effective release method for neck and shoulder tension.
No prerequisite.
Massage and Medications - 12 hours
The course is designed to teach students the skills and knowledge they need to begin interpreting drug information. It will help them learn to develop safe and effective treatment plans for clients taking medications. Students will learn to communicate more confidently with members of other health care professions about a client's use of medication.
No prerequisite.
Massage Research - 12 hours
Students will receive the basics of research, with a specific emphasis on massage. They will learn the language needed to be able to understand the research reports, where to find specific research material and many other useful tools that will assist the successful massage therapist with his/her practice and clients.

Neuromuscular Massage -
48 hours
The first thirty-five hours focuses on neuromuscular therapy. Learn in-depth techniques to release trigger points that cause pain referral problems in soft tissue. Body assessment skills will also be taught. The last fifteen hours will focus on introduction to working with the fascial system.
Prerequisite: Massage experience or Cayce/Reilly Massage.
Reflexology I - 20 hours
Through demonstration and hands-on practice, students learn the history, purpose and application of this ancient healing art. Explanation of zone theory, foot anatomy and various palpation techniques offered.
No prerequisite.
Swedish Massage - 16 hours
This class introduces the student to basic, classic Swedish massage and its history, purpose, variety of strokes and uses. Utilizing the various movements, students practice locating specific muscle origins, insertions and other landmarks.
Prerequisite: Massage experience
