Through the practice of observing, following and supporting subtle movement patterns in joints and tissue, muscular tension is released, range of motion is increased and pain is alleviated. More subtle means more effective for many clients, and less effort for the practitioner.

This intensive course combines the art and science of touch to create safe,
effective massage sessions for clients with cancer, in cancer treatment and with
cancer histories. In a lively, supportive learning environment, we carefully
debunk the long-held contraindication to massage and discuss current research
findings about the benefits of touch for people with cancer. Participants learn
essential cancer intake questions, proper follow-up on the client's answers, and
proven strategies for involving a client's physician when necessary. We
describe concrete massage adjustments for surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, bone
metastasis and vital organ involvement. A balanced approach to learning blends
lecture, spirited discussion, and hands-on work with volunteer clients with
cancer. Music, art and literature by people who have had cancer help expand our
understanding of the journey. Massage therapists from varied backgrounds and
massage settings leave with tools that continue to support them in their work:
sample client intake forms, physician information and permission materials, and
summaries of massage research.
* We are seeking volunteer clients for a free massage therapy session within
this training. People experiencing treatment, diagnosis, and life beyond cancer
are all invited to receive a massage as part of this clinic. These sessions are
by appointment. Please call us at 757-428-3588, x 7285 for more information.

Myofascial Release Massage, Part II, Lower Body
Time: Friday 6-10pm, Saturday & Sunday 9am-6pm
Instructor: Scott Dobbins, LMT, NCTMB
Credit: 20 Continuing Education hours
Cost: $360 ($310 if paid in full thirty days in advance)
Prerequisite: Myofascial Release Massage, Part I, Upper Body
If you ask most people where they store stress and tension they will tell you the neck and shoulders. While this is true, they are unaware that their feet, legs, and pelvis are also chronically tense. Myofascial constrictions in the lower body is just as enervating as it is elsewhere in the body and it distorts the way people stand, walk, and move. This workshop will build on what you learned in the Upper Body course so that you will be able to offer your clients a complete head to toe Myofascial Release Massage. You will also be able to deal more effectively
with specific complaints from low back pain and plantar fascitis. By the end of the seminar you will have felt the difference the Myofascial Release Massage makes to the lower body alone, and the difference the Upper Body and Lower Body work makes to the entire body. You'll feel more relaxed, more grounded, more graceful, and probably taller. The course will include a review of all strokes taught in the Myofascial Release Massage, Upper Body.
